On May 18, 2008, Maris Berg coordinated the efforts of more than 20 community volunteers to paint the school fences at The Mullanphy School, down the street (to the east) from the Missouri Botanical Gardens. The purpose of the project was to cover the lead paint, which was pealing off, with a sealant paint, to keep the lead from poisoning the school children. Volunteers from the various HGC congregations, interested community activists, and some young men from the Juvenile Detention Center took part in the project.
